The Colts obviously can't win without Peyton Manning. He is the face of their franchise and they need him back. We don't know if he'll be the same when he returns this season. We don't know if he'll return this season. We don't know if he'll return at all. However, he does know how to play the game, he plays the game well, and he has the best brain for the NFL. What some teams are doing now is drafting talented QBs before their franchise QB retires, and training him before the franchise QB retires so they'll be ready to go the following season. The Packers did it with Favre and Rodgers, and it obviously worked out wonderfully. It looks as though the Patriots may do it as well with them drafting Ryan Mallett out of Arkansas. The Colts may wind up with the #1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. If they don't it is still possible to trade up draft picks. If the Colts draft Andrew Luck with the #1 pick, they could train him under Peyton Manning to make the Colts what they used to be.
